Kirsty Edwards
Community activist, Falmouth Mayor, 2023-2024
Nominated by Barnes
“Kirstie Edwards was mayor of Falmouth from 2023- 2024, the 176th mayor to be elected, and the fourth woman since Edith Frost in 1962, the last being Maureen Davis elected in 2002.
In her roles as Deputy Mayor and Mayor, Kirsty challenged what a Mayor is expected to be - she could be seen in her mayoral chains picking up litter, dancing through the streets waving a pride flag, or climbing on tanks at events, not just smiling and nodding! Along with her colleagues at Falmouth town council, she has led fundamental changes to the language of the council to make it gender neutral and enable equal representation.
As a prominent voice on environmental issues, Kirstie led Falmouth to plastic free status in 2018 and has been pivotal in many of the positive changes we have seen in Falmouth to protect sea and land respectively.
Kirstie has used her voice to bring attention to a range of topics including: violence against women and girls, domestic violence, mental health in children and adults, special educational needs access, disability awareness and access, hate crime and inclusivity and climate action. She is dedicated to being a voice for those that find it challenging to have one.
Working alongside her colleagues on a number of projects in Falmouth and with a particular focus on increasing provision for young people, Kirstie saw the Falmouth Skatepark to fruition this year, creating a new community for those living in one of the lowest income estates in Europe.
Kirstie trained as a teacher and is mother to six children.”
