Pillar of the Community

Shakti says, “Born and bred in Falmouth and Penryn, as were many generations of her family before her, Margaret has worked tirelessly for her community throughout her 84 years. Her contributions to community welfare and cohesion are enormous, intangible and immeasurable. She is so kind, gentle and understanding of others. Without people like her the world would be bleak, but sadly we often don’t recognise this. So I nominate her strongly.

Margaret has helped guide and run Penryn Methodist Church for years, looking after her local community in Penryn, Falmouth and surrounding areas by helping the sick and infirm. She cooks for and spends time with the elderly, grows food, sings in a choir and plays piano and the organ at church amongst many other things.

As my neighbour she has shown my family and me a lot of kindness and care. I have learnt a lot from her and admire the ways in which she thinks about and does things for others, how connected she is to different parts of the community and how well informed. Margaret is open to new ideas and understanding of change. I’m from India and think of her as my family here.

Margaret has lived in Penryn since the age of 5, leaving for 8 years to go to South Africa with her family. She has many interesting stories and experiences from that time. A fountain of knowledge from growing food and cooking pasties to local history and music, she loves a good crossword puzzle.”
