What is life drawing?

During a life drawing session, there will be a nude model surrounded by people drawing them. The model will be posing for different lengths of time. The poses can vary from 2 minutes to 10 minutes and longer.

You will be drawing the human form in various poses and levels of detail from anatomically proportional drawings to loose and expressive sketches.

We will cover:

  • How to use basic shapes and lines to draw the figure.

  • Building a relationship between what you see and what you draw.

  • An introduction to the use of gesture, structure and detail to understand proportion and composition.

  • How to interpret light, form and volume, bringing a three-dimensional quality to your drawing.

Materials and equipment:

Working from a live model, this workshop includes all paper and dry drawing materials (pencils, charcoal, chalk, pen). Participants are welcome to bring their own paper and materials if desired.

We have A1 and A2 drawing boards and clips with 10 easels for you to use standing or sitting. The drawing boards can also be comfortably used sitting down and resting on trestles.

Please note:

The room temperature will be adjusted using infra-red and fan heaters for the model’s comfort during the session. Please dress appropriately for sessions as the space may get hot.

Art Centre Penryn and Life Drawing Lab provide safe and inclusive spaces in which to work and be creative. We have a zero-tolerance policy for any disrespectful or offensive behaviour. The code of conduct displayed at the art room must be followed.
