What is The Knitting Works?

Learn to knit or improve your skills at The Knitting Works. This is a relaxed group for people at any stage of their knitting journey, from complete beginners onwards. As well as skills development, The Knitting Works is about supporting wellbeing through creative activity and spending time with others.

Who is the group for?

The Knitting Works is open to everyone. Maybe you’re a student looking for a friendly group to join, or a new parent who would like to get out and about and learn a new skill (babes in arms welcome), or you’re feeling a bit lonely and would like some company. Whatever the reason, everyone is welcome to come along and knit, with expert and friendly guidance.

Who runs the sessions?

The Knitting Works is run on a voluntary basis by Kerry Hepworth. Kerry lives in Penryn and has been knitting since the age of six when her grandmother gave her that first yarn and needles. Over sixty years of knitting has allowed her to explore almost every area of knitting, including colour work, texture, freestyle, knitwear design and teaching others to knit. She knits with fascination and joy, for herself and for those many people she loves.

Why knit?

Kerry says: “In a world which feels constantly moving, knitting offers an opportunity to stop in our tracks, take a breather and reevaluate what we consume. There is a kind of magic in moving that simple ball of yarn through your fingers until it becomes a garment. There is a sense of accomplishment as each piece grows stitch by stitch.

Knitting keeps nervous hands busy. Sometimes knitting is ‘conversational’, it can be easier to share problems and woes while knitting. There’s also the kind of knitting that lets your mind wander – stitches happening seemingly by themselves, distracting but not taxing. Once the basic skills are learnt Knitting becomes Mindful.”

Do I have to book, pay or bring anything?

No need to book, just come along.

Sliding scale donations to help make it accessible to everyone:
