ELAINE lorys
Fishing
Suggested by Lauren Jenkin and Sarah Brumpton
Lauren says, “Elaine Lorys is the first female Master fishmonger in the UK. She was nominated for this by the managing director of W Stevenson and Sons fish company who she has worked for in the same shop in Newlyn since the day it opened 28 years ago.
Elaine is my mum so she will always be important to me and so many others in the community. She is one of the kindest people you will ever meet going above and beyond for everyone and she deserve to be recognised for all the hard work she has put out over the years. She has always lived in Cornwall and was born in Hayle moving to Newlyn where she lives and works now.”
From BBC News website 18 May 2019:
“Elaine Lorys from Newlyn in Cornwall is the 13th person in the UK to become a certified master fishmonger. The Master Fishmonger Standard recognises “professional excellence” and “a true commitment to the fish trade and to the future of our oceans.
Elaine said: “You need a wide knowledge of everything to do with the fishing industry and the sustainability side of it, filleting methods, customer service and a broad knowledge of everything to do with fish in general. Things have changed a lot, with quotas and different problems the fishermen face. A lot more people are eating fresh fish now and they are much more interested in the provenance of where it comes from.”
