HELEN martin

Community and Voluntary Action, Health and Social Care

Suggested by Annabel Timmins

Annabel writes, “Helen’s daughter Holly suffered a traumatic brain injury three years ago which has caused life changing disabilities.

Helen works tirelessly to improve the lives of people with disabilities through raising awareness, supporting others, campaigning and advising on accessibility including working with hospital designers on how environments can be improved for patients and families. Helen now works for Access Cornwall and through her work shares good practice, supports businesses in Cornwall to be more accessible and improves the lived experience for those with a disability.

Helen makes other people’s lives better without ever thinking about herself. She never feels sorry for herself, doesn’t recognise what an inspiration she is and therefore needs recognition from others. She is creative, she is funny, she is a fierce voice for those that don’t get heard. But she never speaks up for herself.

Helen lives and works in Cornwall, her work takes all over the county. Helen is an important part of her community, making Cornwall a better and more accessible place to be. She has 1.8K followers who look to her for support and inspiration on the Facebook page, Come on Hollypop that she set up following Holly’s accident.”
