HILARY COLEMAN

Music

Suggested by Jan Webb

Jan says, "Hilary is a talented musician (clarinet and voice and other instruments ) who has dedicated years to finding authentic Cornish songs, introducing them to her large folk choir, The Red River Singers (begun in Pool in 2012 and still going strong). Recordings of these songs are often made in places which enhance the experience for the singers e.g in a mine for mining songs and the cemetery at Calstock for a song about the Titanic and the Cornish who went down with her.

Hilary has published three books through Fenten Music- mining songs, songs of the sea and rivers and most recently, farming songs. Many of these are in Cornish. There are also two books -Shout Kernow (pub songs) and Hark - Cornish carols. She was a member of Dalla and has her own band too.
Hilary inspires her choir members seeking excellence not perfection. Rehearsals are often full of laughter. She is always ready to involve the choir with other creative projects. And she's a real champion of things Cornish - language, music, dance, pasties and cakey tea! She's a Bard.

Hilary lives in a small Cornish village and is connected to Cornwall through music, dance, language, landscape and history. She has performed at the Folk festival on Scilly.

Hilary encourages me to sing and give of my best and is so steeped in all things Cornish I have grown to share her enthusiasm. She is generous with her time, energy and has so widened my experience. I loved singing in a mine, on the beach and in a farmyard.
