Language & Culture of Cornwall
Suggested by Rebecca Davis & Daniel Woodfield
Daniel writes,
“Jowdy Davey is the language lead at Cornwall council and chair of the board of trustees of Lowender CIO. She has been at the forefront of recent innovations in revitalisation efforts across Kernewek, as well as distinctively Cornish music, dance and song. She advocates for Cornish culture and communities at national and international levels, ensuring a grassroots voice is heard.
She has given me the support to achieve personal and professional goals, including the creation of the Cornwall Youth Folk Ensemble. She has helped me and many others with kindness, care and guidance that facilitates agency, safety and passion.
Jowdy grew up embedded in the traditions of cornish music and dance, has performed internationally and now provides the space and opportunities for young cornish people to learn about traditions, language and develop pathways into a professional and communal practices. I cannot think of many people who have her level of knowledge and determination when it comes to Kernewek, and Cornish music, dance and song.”
Rebecca Davis writes,
“Jowdy Inspires people of all ages to connect with the culture of Cornwall in inclusive and diverse ways. She has helped to run the Lowender Peran festival, promotes the cornish language and is a Cornish Bard who has also helped strengthen connections between Cornwall and other Celtic nations. Her work involves her in helping others too including fundraising for cornish organisations who want to promote their own take on the unique Cornish culture.
Since meeting her at 11 years old she has been my best friend. I know no one as kind, funny or caring. Her sense of adventure and “can do” spirit is inspiring. She makes me laugh like no one else. Now we both have young families, bringing them up here in Cornwall I can’t think of anyone else so deserving to be recognised.”
