Linda Styles

Art Potter

Suggested by Nell Marton

“Linda has lived in Falmouth and worked in Cornwall for decades. Her influence spreads far and wide, she has inspired generations of makers, and is well known for her many years of teaching ceramics at Cornwall College.

Linda is a powerhouse of creativity, spontaneity and production. Enduring devastating loss and difficulty throughout her life, Linda has never wavered in her honest and visceral communication through her art. Her magical environment is her life blood and inspiration. This is a woman of real significance in Cornwall today; tenaciously truthful, flamboyant and joyful.

Linda was like a mythical creature when I first came to Cornwall to study ceramics. I heard of her and occasionally caught sight of the back of her brightly coloured tail feathers wafting through doors. This striking woman commands a distinct presence both in person and through her exciting and exuberant work.

I taught ceramics for many years, and as a maker myself I have rarely come across such prolific persistence in making. The work pours from her with determined joy. Linda never stops teaching and encouraging others, passing on her extensive knowledge of colour in glaze and running courses whilst exhibiting and selling work widely. Linda represents the very best of Cornish ceramics and deserves a significant place in history.”
